Shane West...
Q: Did you know any of the actors before beginning the shooting of
the movie?
SW: Yeah, Victor and I knew each other. We met through Adam Shankman actually,
who’s the director of 'A Walk To Remember'. Adam called me at some point
after the movie to ask me if I could write a song for his next project,
'Bringing Down The House', a movie in which Victor Webster has a little
part. I agreed, and Victor and I were introduced at some point. After that we ran into
each other on several occasions.
Q: How was your first day?
SW: It's always a little awkward when you come to a set where they all know
each other. I mean, it's a movie, but it was a TV-show first. They all kinda
spent the last couple of years together. And it's the same set, seeing that
the majority of the scenes are in Sanctuary. And actually, funny thing is,
the first scene we rehearsed and shot was Derek's arrival in 2008. So, you
pretty much had on the set what is in the scene in how Derek was seen as an
intruder as soon as he came out of the vortex. I was the new guy, the stranger,
on the set as well. But it definitely didn't last. It was very friendly; we
had a lot of fun.
Q: How did you prepare for the role? Were you familiar with Mutant
X?
SW: I wasn't. I had heard a little about the show, but never saw an ep. So,
they asked me to watch the first season and some eps of the second one. Because
Derek appears in the middle of the second season and even if he never witnessed
what happened before his apparition, his parents told him about their lives
and missions from that time, you know? And it was a good way to get familiar
with my character anyway, with the other characters too as a matter of fact.
I also talked a lot with Victor and Lauren to get a better feeling of their
characters, seeing that Derek is their son, so a lot like them. And of course
I rewatched the 'Back to the Future' trilogy.
Q: What do you think of the different pairings/couples?
SW: Well, I read the script before watching the show, you know? So, I was
biased. That's probably why I could definitely see the Brennan/Emma storyline.
Because the other actors didn't seem to have thought about it that way before.
Same goes for Shalimar and Adam actually. I didn't know the characters beforehand
so it didn't seem wrong to me. From what I could understand though, the others
were picturing Brennan and Emma together way easier than Adam and Shalimar.
Q: How did you get the part as Derek?
SW: I... stole Audrey's script. (laughs) That's the answer you'll get if you
ask her. What happened was that a friend of her, Jennyfer, she's consultant
on the set, suggested me for the part when Audrey was looking for the actor
to play Derek. She was reluctant at first, really, because she didn't know
my work. But something clicked when she saw some pics from the set of 'A
Walk to Remember'. She then watched the movie, tried to find other things
I had done. The rest is history. And she told me afterwards that when I came
to read for the part, I already had the role in her mind.
Q: Which scene did you have to read for the audition?
SW: The audition was probably the greatest I had. They made me read the scene
where Adam scans Derek when he just appears in 2008. And John was actually
there that day to play opposite me, so that was pretty cool.
Q: You said in an interview for "The League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen" that the power you'd like to have is intangibility. Did you
try to read for Darien?
SW: Sadly no (laughs). I'm too old to play Darien. But he's just invisble
anyway. Forbes' character is the intangible one. I couldn't really read for
his part though. But you know, my powers are pretty cool too.
Q: So, tell us about Derek...
SW: Well, Derek is Emma and Brennan's son. He's 19 when the movie's taking
place. He's a very self-assured young man, like his father, but also very
sensitive, due to his psionic abilities. The big problem is that he got his
father's impulsivity, and that leads him to trouble most of the time. He's
studying bio-genetics - got the likes of it from his mother obviously, and
probably also from the fact that he spent almost his whole life surrounded
by those kind of things anyway. So, that's the main reason he's chosen to
go back in time. That and the fact he's the older one. But he wasn't really
prepared for what he would have to face...
Q: What attracted you to this movie?
SW: I’ve always been a comic book fan. A fan of super heroes, super
powers. I had a blast shooting 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'. And
we’re still all hoping/waiting for the sequel. It’s been three years and I
was... I don’t know, I guess I just wanted to go back to a fantastic
universe. Also The League was an action movie. All action, like 100% action
from the begining to the end, nothing else. Here with 'Vibes of Time' it’s
completely different. Well, first I have super powers. That’s cool. (laughs)
But the story in itself, it’s a character’s story, about interactions,
conflicts. It takes place in a fantastic universe but it focuses on the
human aspect. So it’s a totally different angle and that’s what I like about
it.
